Train to Teach

Initial Teacher Training

At the Turing School we are committed to the delivery of high quality initial teacher training. We understand that this is essential to boost teacher recruitment and ensure we have the very best teachers within our institution and the local community. The Turing School and Swale Academies Trust has experienced mentors to support comprehensive training across a broad range of subjects, and we are proud of the strong relationships that we have developed with both our partnership universities and Sussex Teacher Training.

As a Hub School, we work with a number of different providers for Initial Teacher Training to offer school and university-based routes for training:

These include:

Sussex and Brighton Universities

The Turing School has well-established partnerships with both Sussex and Brighton universities. Trainees studying for their postgraduate teaching qualification at university will complete two placements in local schools during their course.  Information on the range of PGCE courses available at each institution can be found on their website.

Our Student Teachers enjoy their placement with us and value their training:

‘I have grown so much during my time at Turing. Staff are incredibly generous with their time and have so many opportunities to develop. And it has felt so rewarding to be at a school where your impact will make that much more of a difference’ A - Sussex PGCE

A wonderful school with brilliant professional tutor and mentors that are very supportive and help improve your teaching.’ K - Sussex PGC

Sussex Teacher Training

Are you interested in training to become a primary or secondary school teacher?

Our school is a Hub School for Sussex Teacher Training. We are working in partnership with other schools in Sussex to provide outstanding teacher training. This is important to us because it means we can choose the very best talent and develop them into teachers. Being able to choose who we train as teachers helps us with delivering the best outcomes for our students.

We have vacancies now to start training from September 2025, and we would be very interested to hear from you if you are thinking of becoming a teacher or know someone who is. We are looking for people who have (or will have) a degree, have a passion for teaching and want to inspire young people to fulfil their potential. We have both primary and secondary teacher training places in our partnership.

Teaching Apprenticeship Programme

The postgraduate teaching apprenticeship programme is a nationally recognised, work-based route into teaching. It is an alternative to a traditional full-time university course, offering a postgraduate-level qualification, no tuition fees, and the opportunity to earn while you learn. Teaching apprenticeships last twelve months, with trainees splitting their time between in-classroom practice and study of teaching pedagogy.

The college is currently working with Sussex Teacher Training and TES as a training provider for the apprenticeship route.
